What a cannabis keychain pipe is
A cannabis keychain pipe is a hand pipe sized to hang on a key ring. Most measure 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm). A loop, ring, or hole in the body holds the split ring. The pipe works like any hand pipe: a bowl holds ground material, a channel carries smoke and vapor, and a mouthpiece delivers it. A side hole, the carb, controls airflow.
People buy them for two reasons. One group keeps a pipe on a set of keys. The other buys a small backup piece. Size is the main difference from a full hand pipe.
Materials
- Glass: borosilicate. Holds flavor. Breaks when dropped. Common lengths run 2 to 3 inches.
- Metal: aluminum or stainless steel. Many unscrew into two halves. Light, and hard to break.
- Silicone: flexible and heat resistant. Does not shatter. Most models hold a glass or metal bowl insert.
- Wood and ceramic: less common. Wood can char. Ceramic chips.
How it works
Pack the bowl with ground material. Do not pack it tight, because air must pass through. Cover the carb with one finger, draw, then release the carb to clear the chamber. Metal models with screw threads open for cleaning. Some have a storage tube inside the body that holds a screen or a small load of material.
Legal status in the United States
Cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. 21 U.S.C. § 863 bans the sale of drug paraphernalia, and the statute covers pipes. A keychain pipe sold for tobacco use sits in a gray zone. Intent and marketing matter. State law differs, and some states allow medical or adult-use cannabis while others do not.
Hemp-derived CBD with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. That rule covers the CBD, not the pipe. Check state and city rules before you buy or carry one.
Cleaning
Resin builds on the bowl and stem. Clean metal parts with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a pipe cleaner. Soak glass in alcohol with coarse salt, shake, then rinse with hot water. Silicone can be boiled or washed with soap and warm water. Replace screens when the holes clog. Let every part dry before use.
What to check before you buy
- Length and weight. A 2-inch pipe adds little bulk to a key ring. A 4-inch pipe is easier to load.
- Thread quality on metal models. Crossed threads leak air.
- Bowl depth. Shallow bowls hold less material than deep bowls.
- Carb hole. A missing or oversized hole changes the draw.
- Material claims. Look for food-grade silicone and lead-free metal statements.
Safety notes
Metal and glass get hot at the bowl. Hold the body, not the bowl. Glass breaks, and broken edges cut. Do not share a pipe when you are sick, because saliva and germs transfer on the mouthpiece. Cannabis smoke contains irritants and tar. Store a pipe away from children and pets. Residual resin is sticky and hard to remove from fabric.
