Short answer
Most US cities have no cannabis cafe. No state licenses Amsterdam-style shops where staff sell and serve cannabis for use at a table. A few states license consumption lounges, also called on-site consumption sites or hospitality establishments. A second, unrelated business is the CBD cafe, which sells hemp drinks and food and no intoxicating cannabis.
What the license is called
Search state license registries, not map apps. Useful terms: consumption lounge, on-site consumption, marijuana hospitality establishment, social consumption. Nevada licenses cannabis consumption lounges. California issues on-site consumption licenses through the Department of Cannabis Control. Colorado licenses hospitality establishments. New York allows on-site consumption at licensed dispensaries after state approval.
States with active lounges
Nevada created a consumption lounge license in 2021 and the first sites opened in Las Vegas in 2023. California has issued a handful of on-site consumption licenses since 2018. Colorado allowed hospitality businesses starting in 2016, and the first clubs opened in Denver. New York, New Jersey and Illinois permit on-site use with local approval. Site counts stay low. Causes: zoning limits, ventilation codes, landlord refusal, and city opt-outs.
CBD cafes are a different business
A CBD cafe sells hemp-derived goods: drinks, baked items, tinctures, topicals. Federal law caps hemp at 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight under the 2018 Farm Bill. These shops do not sell cannabis flower for on-site smoking. The FDA has not approved CBD as a food additive and has no rule for CBD in food and drinks sold across state lines. Ask for a batch lab sheet with a test date and a cannabinoid panel before you buy.
Checks before you go
- Age: 21 and over in every adult-use state. Bring a government photo ID.
- License: ask for the state license number and match it to the state registry.
- Bring your own: some lounges let customers bring cannabis bought at another retailer; others sell on site.
- Smoking code: indoor smoking bans and ventilation rules apply. Some sites allow vaping and edibles only.
- Payment: federal banking limits keep many sites cash-only.
- Driving: open-container and impaired-driving laws still apply outside the building.
Cost and hours
Cover charges vary by venue. Some charge at the door and sell drinks; some charge nothing. Hours follow local business rules and change with events. Call before a trip. Published lists go out of date.
If the list is empty near you
Check the state cannabis regulator site for licensed consumption sites. If the count is zero, no legal public option exists in that state. Private clubs that sell cannabis without a license operate outside the law and carry product-safety risk.
