What the test measures
Oral fluid collection uses a swab on the cheek, gum line, or under the tongue. Labs screen for the THC parent drug, not the urine metabolite THC-COOH. Saliva THC tracks recent use. It does not measure THC stored in fat, which is why the window is hours, not weeks.
SAMHSA sets federal oral fluid cutoffs at 4 ng/mL for the initial immunoassay and 2 ng/mL for the confirmatory GC-MS or LC-MS test. Retail point-of-care swabs often use cutoffs from 10 ng/mL to 50 ng/mL. Higher cutoffs shorten the positive window.
What changes the number
- Route: smoking and vaping deposit THC directly in the mouth.
- Frequency: daily use raises baseline levels.
- Elapsed time since the last dose.
- Saliva flow and hydration.
- Oral pH.
- Food, drink, and cigarettes in the hour before collection.
- Mouthwash, brushing, and water lower surface THC for a short period. They do not clear it.
CBD products
Full-spectrum CBD can carry trace THC. A label listing THC at 0.3% or below still adds THC to the body across repeated high doses. CBD isolate contains no THC. No CBD product masks a cannabis test result, and no CBD product speeds clearance.
Limits of the data
No home method removes THC from oral fluid. Results depend on the cutoff, the collection device, and the lab. A negative swab does not prove zero use. A positive swab does not measure impairment.
