Nugs are the dried flower buds of the female cannabis plant. Each one is a compact cluster of calyxes, small leaves and resin glands that carries most of the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes. In everyday talk, "nug" is simply slang for a single bud of cannabis or hemp flower. The word also has a second, unrelated meaning: a chicken nugget.
Where the word "nug" comes from
A nugget is a small, dense lump, and the term was first used for lumps of gold and metal. Cannabis flower grows in tight, rounded clusters, so smokers borrowed the same word. "Nug" and "bud" mean the same thing, and you will hear both used for hemp flower sold in CBD shops.
What a cannabis nug is made of
- Calyxes and bracts: the seed pods that form the structure of the bud.
- Pistils: the thin orange or brown hairs you see on the surface.
- Trichomes: the tiny resin glands that look like frost, and where cannabinoids such as CBD and THC are concentrated.
- Sugar leaves: the small leaves close to the flower that are often trimmed away before sale.
Only female plants produce these buds in any quantity. Male plants form pollen sacs instead and are removed from a grow so the females do not put energy into seed production.
Nugs compared with the rest of the plant
- Trim and shake: loose leaf and broken flower left over from trimming.
- Fan leaves: the large leaves with low cannabinoid content.
- Stems and seeds: woody or hard material that is usually discarded.
- Popcorn nugs: small, underdeveloped buds from lower branches.
Growers sort flower by size and density because the top buds of a plant are the most resinous. A well-trimmed nug should be mostly flower, not stem or leaf.
CBD nugs vs. THC nugs
The difference comes down to chemistry and to law. Hemp flower, often sold as CBD nugs, must contain no more than 0.3 percent delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis under US federal rules. Cannabis above that line is treated as marijuana. Because plants vary, quality sellers publish a certificate of analysis from a third-party lab for each batch, listing cannabinoid percentages and a screen for pesticides, heavy metals and mold.
The FDA has approved only one CBD-based prescription drug and has not approved CBD for general over-the-counter or dietary supplement use, so CBD flower sits in a shifting regulatory space.
How to judge the quality of a nug
- Look: even color, visible frosty trichomes and a clean trim.
- Smell: a fresh, plant-forward aroma, not hay, ammonia or mold.
- Feel: springy and slightly sticky, not bone dry or crumbly.
- Documentation: a batch-matched lab report with a harvest or test date.
How people use nugs
Most people smoke or vaporize the flower as is. For edibles and oils, the bud has to be decarboxylated first, which means heating it so the acidic cannabinoids convert into active forms, then infusing it into a fat such as butter or oil. Smoking always involves inhaling combusted plant matter and can irritate the throat and lungs, so some people choose a dry-herb vaporizer instead.
