What weed drinks are
Weed drinks are beverages that contain THC. THC is the compound that causes impairment. The THC comes from cannabis or from hemp.
Two markets sell them:
- Dispensary drinks. Sold in states with legal adult-use cannabis. Labels list 2 mg to 10 mg THC per can.
- Hemp drinks. Sold in grocery stores, bars, and online in states that allow them. Federal law caps these at 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight.
Onset and duration
Beverages act faster than solid edibles. Emulsified THC stays suspended in water, which speeds absorption in the gut. Many users report effects in 15 to 30 minutes. Solid edibles take 60 to 120 minutes.
Effects last about 2 to 4 hours. Peak sits near 60 to 90 minutes. Body weight, food in the stomach, and tolerance change the timeline.
Dose
There is no standard dose. A 5 mg can affects a daily user less than a first-time user.
Starting points that labels and public health agencies print:
- 1 mg to 2.5 mg for a first trial.
- 2.5 mg to 5 mg for a light user.
- 5 mg to 10 mg for a regular user.
Wait at least 2 hours before a second drink. Redosing early is the main cause of a bad reaction.
Legal status in the US
Cannabis is a Schedule I drug under federal law. A drink made with cannabis THC is illegal under federal law. State law differs.
Hemp drinks sit in a separate category. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act when delta-9 THC stays at or below 0.3% on a dry weight basis. A maker can put 5 mg of THC in a 12 oz can and stay under that cap because the cap measures percentage, not milligrams.
State rules moved in 2025. Texas passed a law that bans hemp-derived THC products, effective Sept. 1, 2025. Other states added age limits, lab tests, and caps. Check state law before you buy or ship.
CBD drinks
CBD drinks hold cannabidiol and little or no THC. They do not cause a high. The FDA has not approved CBD as a food additive or a dietary supplement ingredient. Some states allow CBD drinks and some do not.
Drug tests
THC drinks can trigger a positive urine test. Metabolites show up within hours and stay detectable for days. Use frequency and body fat change the window. A single 5 mg drink clears in 1 to 3 days for most people. Daily use can extend the window past 30 days.
Safety notes
- Do not drive after a THC beverage.
- Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Keep drinks away from children. Poison center calls for child exposure to edibles and drinks rose after state legalization.
- Tell a clinician about prescription drugs. THC interacts with some medications.
What to check on a label
- THC milligrams per container and per serving.
- Delta-9 THC percentage by dry weight for hemp products.
- Batch lab test with a date.
- Servings per can. Some cans hold 2 to 4 servings.
