Short answer
For most people, no. Sitting near someone smoking weed at a party or on a balcony will not push you over the standard cutoff on a urine test. The amount of THC that reaches your bloodstream that way is tiny, and your body clears it quickly. That said, "most people" is doing real work in that sentence. There is a narrow set of conditions, mostly heavy smoke in a small closed space for a long time, where a urine screen can come back positive. It is rare, but it happens.
Can Secondhand Weed Smoke Show Up on a Drug Test?
What a marijuana drug test is actually looking for
Urine tests, the most common kind, do not look for THC itself. They look for THC-COOH, a metabolite your liver produces after THC enters the bloodstream. Labs screen with an immunoassay, and anything at or above 50 ng/mL gets sent for confirmation by GC-MS or LC-MS/MS, where the cutoff drops to 15 ng/mL.
does inhaling secondhand cannabis smoke cause a positive drug test
That distinction matters. Passive exposure tends to produce very low concentrations, often in the single digits. Detected is not the same as positive.

What the research shows
The controlled studies are the useful ones here. Researchers have put nonsmokers in sealed cars and small unventilated rooms with heavy smokers, then measured their urine. Under extreme conditions, some subjects showed measurable THC-COOH. In the large majority of cases it stayed below 15 ng/mL. A small number of subjects crossed the confirmation threshold, usually after an hour or more in a hotboxed car with the windows up.
Under normal indoor conditions with any ventilation at all, most studies find nothing detectable. Outdoors, essentially no chance.
When secondhand smoke could matter
- Enclosed space, windows up, no airflow, several people smoking heavily
- Exposure lasting an hour or more
- You are sitting right next to the source
- You are small in body mass, so less dilution volume
- You took the test within a day or two of exposure
Stack several of those and the odds stop being negligible. One of them alone, and you are probably fine.
Test type changes the picture
Urine is the standard and the least likely to flag from passive smoke. Blood tests have a short window and would only catch recent, heavy exposure. Oral fluid swabs are more sensitive to contamination right at the moment of exposure, since smoke particles land in your mouth. Hair tests are a different animal. THC in smoke can bind to the outside of hair, and while labs wash samples and look at metabolite ratios to rule out contamination, environmental exposure is a known source of disputed positives. If I had spent an evening in a smoke-filled room, I would worry more about hair than urine.
CBD is the more likely culprit
If you use CBD and you are worried about a test, secondhand smoke is not your main problem. Full-spectrum CBD products can contain small amounts of THC, and a high daily dose over weeks can let it accumulate. There are documented cases of people testing positive from full-spectrum CBD alone. Broad-spectrum and isolate products carry less risk, though "THC-free" on a label is a marketing phrase, not a lab guarantee.
Buy from brands that publish batch certificates of analysis listing THC in milligrams per serving, and read the number instead of the claim.
What I would do
- If a test is coming and you were in an enclosed, smoke-filled space, wait if you can. THC-COOH from a one-time exposure clears in a few days.
- Drink water normally. Dilution tricks do not work, and labs flag low creatinine.
- If you test positive and know you did not use, ask for the confirmation value. A result near 15 ng/mL tells a very different story than 200 ng/mL.
- Disclose CBD use to a medical review officer when it is relevant. It will not always help, but it explains a low positive.
Bottom line
Secondhand marijuana smoke can, in rare and extreme circumstances, cause a positive urine test. Ordinary exposure will not. If you avoid hotboxed cars and unventilated rooms, your risk is close to zero, and the CBD in your cabinet is the thing worth checking.
