Pot syrup is a drinkable cannabis product, usually a flavored sugar or glycerin base with THC, CBD, or both mixed in. It behaves like an edible: you swallow it, your liver processes it, and the effect arrives late and lasts longer than smoking. The bottle in front of you matters more than the category name. A 1000 mg CBD syrup and a 100 mg THC syrup are not the same product with different labels.

What is actually in the bottle

Most syrups start as simple syrup: water, sugar, and flavoring. Some use glycerin or a sugar-free base with a thickener. The active part is a cannabis extract, either distillate that is mostly one cannabinoid or a full-spectrum extract that keeps minor cannabinoids and terpenes. Extracts also carry whatever was in the plant, which is why testing matters. Pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents concentrate in extracts instead of diluting out.

THC Syrup Guide: Effects, Dosing, Legality and CBD Comparison

Dosing is by volume. A 30 ml bottle might list 5 mg THC per ml, so the whole bottle is 150 mg. That is a lot of THC for someone with no tolerance, and it is easy to pour past a serving without noticing.

THC syrup and CBD syrup are different products

  • THC syrup: intoxicating. Effects include euphoria, altered perception, dry mouth, and impaired coordination. Sold through dispensaries in states with legal cannabis.
  • CBD syrup: not intoxicating in the THC sense. Sold as a wellness product, often for sleep, stress, or recovery. It can still interact with prescription drugs.
  • Blends: some bottles list both cannabinoids. The ratio tells you the intent, whether that is 1:1 or 20:1 CBD to THC.
  • Hemp-derived THC: delta-8 and delta-9 made from hemp show up in syrups sold outside dispensaries. Legality swings from state to state.

Timing: why syrup sneaks up

Swallowed cannabinoids pass through the stomach and small intestine, then the liver. THC converts in part to 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that crosses into the brain more readily and feels stronger than the parent compound. Onset runs 30 to 120 minutes. Peak is often 2 to 4 hours in. Total duration is 6 to 8 hours and can run longer after a large dose.

Weed Syrup Guide: THC vs CBD, Dosing, and Label Checks

A full stomach slows the rise but can raise how much you absorb, so the same pour hits differently after dinner than on an empty stomach. Sipping over 20 minutes versus drinking it fast changes little once it is down.

Dosing without guessing

Use the marked dropper or cup that came with the bottle. Kitchen spoons vary by a factor of two or three, which is a real problem at 5 mg per ml.

  1. Read the per-ml number, not the per-bottle number.
  2. New to THC: start at 1 to 2.5 mg. Wait two hours before any second pour.
  3. CBD only: 10 to 25 mg is a common starting point. Some people go higher, but there is no reason to start there.
  4. Log the dose and the time. Delayed onset makes memory unreliable.

Label checks before you buy

Ask for the certificate of analysis, or COA, and match the batch number on the COA to the batch number on the bottle. A COA for a different batch says nothing about your bottle.

  • Cannabinoid potency per ml and per bottle, measured rather than calculated from the recipe.
  • Pesticide, heavy metal, residual solvent, and microbial panels.
  • Date of manufacture and expiration.
  • Producer license number, where your state issues one.
  • Sugar content, if calories or blood sugar matter to you.

One more layer: the FDA has approved a single CBD prescription drug and has not cleared CBD as a supplement ingredient or food additive. That leaves most CBD syrup labels as voluntary claims. A third-party lab report is the only real check you have.

Storage and basic safety

Keep it in the fridge, cap it tight, and shake before each pour. Cannabinoids can settle or separate, so the first pour and the last pour from the same bottle may not match.

  • Lock it up if children or pets are in the house. Sweet syrup in a bottle reads as candy.
  • Skip alcohol. The mix raises impairment and nausea risk.
  • Do not drive after THC syrup, even if you feel normal in the first hour.
  • Ask a pharmacist about interactions if you take warfarin, clobazam, or other drugs processed by CYP enzymes.

Is pot syrup legal where you are?

It depends on the state and on where the cannabinoids came from. Dispensary THC syrup requires a medical card or an adult-use purchase in states with legal cannabis. Hemp-derived THC syrup sits in a patchwork, legal in some states and restricted or banned in others. CBD syrup is sold widely, though a few states restrict it in food. Check your state rules before ordering, and buy in-state when you can.

Quick answers

Does it get you high? Only if it contains THC. CBD syrup does not produce a THC-style high.

How fast does it hit? Plan on 30 to 120 minutes, with the peak between hours two and four.

Can I cook with it? Stir it into cold or warm drinks. High heat does not improve it and can degrade some cannabinoids.
