Pot Honey Explained

Pot honey is honey infused with cannabis. The cannabis can be decarboxylated flower, kief, hash, or a concentrate such as distillate. Once infused, the honey carries cannabinoids like THC, CBD, or both, depending on the plant material used. It is eaten, not smoked, so it works as an edible.

Timing is the part most people get wrong. Inhaled cannabis hits within minutes. Pot honey does not. Most people feel effects 30 to 90 minutes after eating it, and those effects can last four to eight hours. The delay is why people take a second spoonful too soon and end up far higher than they intended.

THC Honey vs CBD Honey

The two versions behave in different ways, and they are not interchangeable.

Marijuana Honey: A Buyer's Guide to Cannabis and CBD Honey

  • THC honey is intoxicating. It produces a high and is legal only under state medical or adult-use cannabis programs.
  • CBD honey is not intoxicating. It is sold in many states, though rules for hemp-derived products vary.
  • Full-spectrum honey contains THC, CBD, terpenes, and minor cannabinoids. It can trigger a positive drug test.

Read the label for total milligrams of cannabinoids per jar and per teaspoon before you buy or use any infused honey. Hemp and cannabis products vary widely in actual cannabinoid content.

How Pot Honey Is Made

  1. Decarboxylate the cannabis by spreading ground flower on a baking sheet and heating it at 240°F for 30 to 40 minutes.
  2. Cool the decarboxylated material to room temperature.
  3. Combine one cup of honey with 3 to 7 grams of the prepared cannabis in a double boiler.
  4. Warm the mixture at low heat for 40 to 60 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
  5. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth to remove plant material.
  6. Pour the finished honey into a clean glass jar with a lid.

Concentrate-based honey skips the straining step. Warm the honey, stir in distillate or oil, and mix until the two are uniform.

Dosing Pot Honey

  1. Read the jar to find milligrams of THC or CBD per teaspoon.
  2. Start with 1 to 2.5 mg of THC if you are new to edibles.
  3. Wait two full hours before taking any more.
  4. Adjust by small amounts in later sessions based on how the first dose felt.
  5. Write down the dose, the time, and the effect so you can repeat it.

CBD dosing is more forgiving because CBD is not intoxicating, but it still belongs in the same slow, measured routine.

Storage

Keep pot honey in a sealed glass jar away from light and heat. Honey is shelf stable, but cannabinoids degrade over time, so a cool cupboard beats a windowsill. Refrigeration slows separation if the honey was made with oil or butter. Stir before each use so the cannabinoids are spread through the jar rather than pooled at the top.

Safety and Legality

Do not drive after eating THC honey. Do not give it to anyone under 21. Keep jars labeled and out of reach of children and pets, since honey is attractive to both. Cannabis laws differ by state, and hemp-derived CBD rules are still shifting, so check your local rules before you make or buy infused honey.
