Natural cannabis pest control comes down to order of operations: figure out which bug you have, fix the conditions that invited it, add beneficial insects, and only then reach for sprays. Know one thing up front, sprays belong in veg, not in flower. Once buds form, anything you apply lands on material somebody will smoke, vape, or extract.
Identify the pest before you spray
A broad-spectrum "bug spray" kills predators along with pests and often misses the actual target. A cheap 30x loupe or a USB microscope settles this in two minutes. Look at the undersides of leaves and the top inch of your media.
- Spider mites: fine webbing at stem junctions and pale stippled dots on upper leaf surfaces. Two-spotted mites thrive in hot, dry rooms.
- Fungus gnats: small dark flies that scatter when you water. The adults are annoying, the larvae in wet media chew roots.
- Aphids: clusters on new growth, sticky honeydew, sometimes winged.
- Thrips: silvery streaks and tiny black frass on leaves.
- Whiteflies: a cloud of white specks when you bump the plant.
- Broad or russet mites: new growth twists, bronzes, and stops growing. You need magnification to see them at all.
Prevention does most of the work
Most indoor outbreaks trace back to a dirty room, a new clone that walked in with passengers, or media that never dries out. Fix those and you cut your pest pressure in half.
- Quarantine every new clone or seedling for 10 to 14 days, away from the main room.
- Use dedicated room shoes and clean tools. Mites hitch rides on sleeves and pet fur.
- Water on a wet-dry cycle. Fungus gnats need constantly moist media to reproduce.
- Keep air moving and thin the canopy so leaves dry. Still, dense rooms favor mites.
- Hang yellow sticky cards at canopy height and check them weekly. They catch problems early and tell you what you are dealing with.
Beneficial insects
Biological control is the cleanest route indoors, and it works best when you release early rather than after a full outbreak.
Cannabis Pest Control Methods: A Buyer's Guide
- Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus for spider mites.
- Stratiolaelaps scimitus and rove beetles for fungus gnat larvae.
- Ladybug larvae and green lacewing larvae for aphids.
- Encarsia formosa for whiteflies.
Predators need humidity, some need pollen as backup food, and none of them survive a pyrethrin fog. Skip the fog.
Low-risk sprays, soaps, and drenches
Treat sprays as a targeted tool, not a weekly schedule.
- Insecticidal soap (potassium salts of fatty acids): a contact killer. It has to wet the pest directly and does nothing once dry. Good for aphids, whiteflies, and soft-bodied mites.
- Neem oil and azadirachtin: a repellent and insect growth regulator. Apply at lights off, never above about 80 F, and test on one leaf first.
- Horticultural oil: smothers eggs and adults. Same temperature rules.
- Bti drench (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis): kills fungus gnat larvae in the media and leaves the plant alone.
- Diatomaceous earth: a thin dusting on the media surface shreds crawling larvae. Useless once wet, so reapply after watering.
Spray the undersides of leaves. That is where the pests live, not the tops.
Timing, and the flower problem
Everything above is for the vegetative stage and the first days of flower. After that, the math changes. Neem, soap, and oils leave residue on trichomes, and residue is what labs test for. A grower selling CBD flower or sending trim to extraction can fail a panel over a spray applied in week six. If you get a bad infestation late, the honest options are early harvest or cull. Spraying a flowering plant and hoping nobody notices is how people end up with a product they cannot sell.
Companion planting, with a caveat
Basil, mint, marigolds, chives, dill, and cilantro get recommended as repellents or as habitat for beneficials. In a greenhouse they can help. In a sealed tent they mostly add more leaves for pests to hide on and more places to inspect. If you use them, keep them potted, keep them quarantined, and monitor them as closely as the cannabis.
Quick escalation ladder
- Sticky cards and a loupe to confirm the pest.
- Sanitation: remove infested leaves, fix humidity and watering.
- Beneficial insects, released early and in the right numbers.
- Soap or oil spot treatments in veg.
- Bti drench for gnats, diatomaceous earth on the media surface.
- In flower, no sprays. Harvest early or cull.
