Marijuana honey: the short answer
Marijuana honey is honey mixed with a cannabis extract that carries THC, CBD, or both. Cannabinoids are fat-soluble. Honey is about 80% sugar and 17% water, so cannabinoids do not dissolve in it. Makers add a carrier oil or an emulsifier and stir until the mixture holds. THC honey is legal only in states with medical or adult-use cannabis programs. Hemp-derived CBD honey with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC by dry weight sits outside the Controlled Substances Act at the federal level.

Why the two do not mix on their own
THC, CBD, and their acids are lipophilic. Water and sugar syrups are not. Drop a cannabis oil into honey without help and it beads on the surface or pools at the bottom of the jar. Lecithin, MCT oil, or a small amount of alcohol tincture bridges the gap. Even then, the result is a suspension, not a true solution. Stir before each use.
How it is made
- Decarboxylate the plant material or extract. Heat converts THCA to THC and CBDA to CBD. Typical settings are 240 F (115 C) for 30 to 60 minutes. Longer or hotter runs degrade cannabinoids and raise HMF, a honey breakdown compound.
- Infuse. Stir decarbed extract into honey at 140 F (60 C) or below. Higher heat darkens honey and lowers enzyme activity.
- Emulsify. Add sunflower lecithin at about 1% of total weight, or blend in MCT oil. Skip this and the dose per spoonful will vary.
- Test. Send a sample to a lab for potency in mg per gram, plus pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
Dosing
Oral THC bioavailability runs from 4% to 20%, and food delays absorption. Onset is 30 to 120 minutes, longer than inhaled routes. A common starting point is 1 to 2.5 mg THC. CBD doses in honey products often land between 10 and 25 mg. Label math: a 250 g jar with 500 mg total THC holds 2 mg per gram, and a teaspoon of honey weighs about 7 g, so that spoon carries 14 mg.
Storage and shelf life
Plain honey keeps for years at room temperature. Infused honey does not always match that record. Added oil, water, or plant matter lowers water activity and can support mold. Keep the jar sealed, away from light, and refrigerate after opening. Discard jars that smell fermented or show bubbles at the surface.
What to check on a label
- Total mg of THC and CBD, plus mg per serving
- Serving size in grams or teaspoons
- Batch or lot number tied to a lab report
- Date of manufacture
- Source of the extract, hemp or cannabis
Data on long-term stability of cannabinoids in honey is thin. Most shelf-life claims come from maker testing, not published studies.
