How to Use THC Tincture
Place the dose under your tongue. Hold it there for 60 to 90 seconds. Swallow what is left. Wait 2 hours before you take more. A common starting dose is 1 mg to 2.5 mg of THC. Effects start in 15 to 45 minutes and last 4 to 8 hours. Shake the bottle first, because THC settles.
What a THC Tincture Is
A tincture is THC extract in a liquid carrier. Carriers include food-grade alcohol, glycerin, and MCT oil. Most bottles ship with a dropper marked in mL or drops. The label lists total THC in mg and THC per mL or per dropper.
Read the Label Before You Dose
Find two numbers: total THC in the bottle and bottle size in mL. Divide total mg by mL. A 30 mL bottle with 300 mg of THC holds 10 mg per mL. A full dropper (1 mL) is 10 mg. Half a dropper is 5 mg. A quarter dropper is 2.5 mg. A standard dropper holds 20 drops, so one drop is about 0.5 mg. Drop size differs between droppers. Use the mL marks when the label gives mg per mL.
Sublingual vs Swallowed
Under the tongue, THC passes into blood through tissue in the mouth. This route skips first-pass liver metabolism. Onset is faster and each mg hits harder than a swallowed dose. If you swallow the liquid at once, THC goes through the stomach and liver. The liver converts delta-9-THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a stronger compound. Onset moves to 30 to 120 minutes.
Steps
- Shake the bottle for 10 seconds.
- Draw the dose into the dropper. Read the mL mark at eye level.
- Lift your tongue. Put the liquid on the floor of the mouth.
- Hold for 60 to 90 seconds. Do not swallow or talk.
- Swallow the rest.
- Write down the time and the dose.
- Wait 2 hours before another dose.
Dose Ranges
- 1 mg to 2.5 mg: low dose. First-time users and people who want mild effects.
- 2.5 mg to 5 mg: moderate dose.
- 5 mg to 10 mg: standard range on state-regulated labels.
- 10 mg and above: high dose. Tolerance builds with daily use.
These numbers come from state-regulated product labels. Response changes with body weight, tolerance, and liver enzyme activity. Start at the low end.
Timing
Sublingual: first effects in 15 to 45 minutes, peak at 1 to 3 hours, total 4 to 8 hours. Swallowed: first effects in 30 to 120 minutes, peak at 2 to 4 hours, total 6 to 8 hours or longer. A heavy meal slows absorption for swallowed doses. Empty stomach speeds it up.
What to Avoid
Alcohol adds sedation and blurs judgment. Do not drive after a dose. THC raises heart rate and can cause anxiety, dry mouth, and red eyes. Skip tincture if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to a doctor first if you take blood thinners, sedatives, or have heart conditions. THC can interact with warfarin and other prescription drugs.
Storage
Keep the bottle closed, upright, and out of light and heat. Alcohol-based tinctures hold potency for years. Oil-based tinctures can turn rancid. Check the label for a discard date. Keep the bottle away from children and pets.
Legal Note
THC rules differ by state. Hemp-derived THC at 0.3% delta-9-THC or less by dry weight is legal under federal law. Some states ban those products. Check state law before you buy or travel with a tincture.
