How to use cannabis oil

Place the measured dose under your tongue, hold it there for 60 to 90 seconds, then swallow. Start with the lowest dose printed on the label, often 1 to 5 mg of CBD, and wait at least two hours before taking a second dose. Swallowing the oil the moment it hits your mouth sends most of it through your liver, which cuts how much reaches your bloodstream and delays the effect.

How to Use THC Oil: Dosing, Methods, and Safety

Before you start

  • Check your state law. Hemp-derived CBD is legal in most states; THC oil is not.
  • Find the certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party lab. It lists cannabinoid content and contaminants.
  • Review your current medications with a pharmacist or physician. CBD interferes with liver enzymes that clear some prescription drugs.
  • Skip cannabis oil if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 21, unless a physician directs you.

Steps

  1. Read the label and confirm the total milligrams of CBD or THC and the bottle volume in milliliters.
  2. Calculate the dose per drop. A 30 mL bottle with 600 mg of CBD holds 20 mg per mL, and a 1 mL dropper holds about 20 drops, so one drop is roughly 1 mg.
  3. Shake the bottle for a few seconds to redistribute the oil.
  4. Squeeze the dropper bulb and draw oil up to your calculated mark.
  5. Lift your tongue and release the oil onto the floor of your mouth. Keep the dropper tip off your skin.
  6. Hold the oil in place for 60 to 90 seconds. This lets the tissue under your tongue absorb cannabinoids before you swallow.
  7. Swallow what remains.
  8. Wait two hours. Note the onset time, intensity, and how long the effect lasts.
  9. Write the dose, time, and result in a log. Keep the log with the bottle.
  10. Raise the dose by small increments, no more than every few days, until you reach the effect you want.
  11. Stop increasing if you feel lightheaded, sleepy, or nauseated, and drop back to the prior dose.
  12. Cap the bottle tight, stand it upright, and store it in a cool, dark place away from children and pets.

Swallowed or mixed into food

Stir the dose into yogurt, applesauce, or a warm drink. Onset stretches to 30 to 120 minutes and the effect can last six hours or longer. Label the container so nobody eats it by mistake.

Applied to the skin

Topical oils and salves go on the skin for localized relief. They are not dosed the same way as a sublingual tincture, and most do not reach the bloodstream in meaningful amounts.

What to watch for

Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, appetite changes, and loose stools. Stop use and call a physician if you notice yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or pain in the upper right belly, since these can signal liver trouble. Do not drive until you know how the oil affects you.
