A dab is a single serving of cannabis concentrate, vaporized on a hot surface and inhaled in one breath. With CBD, the process looks almost identical to a THC dab, but the temperature window is different and the dose is smaller than most people expect. Heat a quartz banger to roughly 400°F (or set an e-nail to that range), let it settle for 20 to 40 seconds, drop in a piece of CBD wax, crumble, or distillate the size of a grain of rice, cap it, and inhale slowly for 3 to 5 seconds. That is the whole method.

Dabbing Tutorial: How to Get Started with CBD Vaping

What you need before you start

  • A dab rig with a quartz banger, or an e-nail or temperature-controlled vaporizer
  • A carb cap (glass or metal) to trap the vapor
  • A dab tool, metal or glass
  • A butane torch if you are heating manually
  • Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) and cotton swabs
  • An infrared thermometer if you want real control over temperature

An e-nail or a dedicated concentrate vaporizer removes most of the guesswork. If you dab CBD often, that is the upgrade I would make first, because CBD is less forgiving than THC at high heat.

  • A batch-specific certificate of analysis (COA) from an accredited lab
  • Potency results that match the stated CBD content
  • Residual solvent, pesticide, heavy metal, and microbial panels
  • A clear statement of THC content

Hemp-derived CBD products must stay at or below 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis to be federally legal in the US. Some full-spectrum dabs still carry trace THC, which matters if you get tested at work.

Taking a Dab: A Comprehensive Guide

How to take a dab, step by step

  1. Set up your station. Rig on a stable surface, water in the chamber just above the perc, tools and cap within reach, torch upright.
  2. Heat the banger. Aim the flame at the bottom and sides until the quartz glows faintly orange. Ten to twenty seconds is plenty.
  3. Let it cool. This is the step people skip. Wait 30 to 45 seconds for a thick banger, 15 to 25 for a thin one. With an IR thermometer, aim for 380 to 450°F. Without one, hover your hand a few inches above the banger: you want strong radiant warmth, not a sting.
  4. Load the dab. Use the tool to pick up a rice-grain-size piece, around 5 to 10 mg of CBD for a first try.
  5. Drop and cap. Place the dab against the hot floor or wall of the banger and cap it right away. Vapor should start curling.
  6. Inhale slowly. Draw for 3 to 5 seconds with steady, gentle suction. Ripping hard just cools the banger and wastes material.
  7. Hold, then exhale. Two to three seconds in the lungs is enough. Inhaled CBD reaches the bloodstream within minutes, so the effect shows up fast.
  8. Swab while warm. Dry swab first, then one dipped in isopropyl. A clean banger tastes better next round and lasts longer.

Getting the temperature right

CBD vaporizes around 320 to 356°F, well below the 450 to 600°F range many people use for THC dabs. Push a CBD dab past 500°F and you lose a chunk of the cannabinoid to degradation while getting a harsher hit.

My rule of thumb: start at 380°F and adjust up in 20-degree steps. Terpenes in full-spectrum extracts begin boiling near 310°F, so a low-temp dab also keeps more flavor.

Dosing a CBD dab

Inhalation is the fastest route for CBD and one of the more efficient ones. A 5 mg dab produces a noticeable effect for many people within 5 to 15 minutes, peaking around 30 minutes. Because you feel it almost at once, you can add a little at a time. Oral CBD takes 30 to 90 minutes to kick in, which makes it easier to overshoot. Dabbing is more forgiving in that sense, but the effect fades faster, usually within 2 to 4 hours.

Safety and legal notes

  • Never dab off a glowing red banger. It degrades the CBD and can burn your throat and lungs.
  • Butane torches and hot quartz cause serious burns. Keep the rig away from the table edge and never refill a torch near a flame.
  • Skip black-market concentrates. Unregulated extracts have been linked to solvent contamination and lung injury.
  • THC above 0.3% puts a product outside federal hemp law, and some states regulate CBD concentrates separately. Check your state before buying.
  • CBD can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners. Talk to a clinician if you take prescription drugs.
