Quick answer
Grind dried flower into pieces about 2 to 3 mm wide. Fill the bowl in one pass until the flower sits 1 to 2 mm below the rim. Tap the pipe wall to level the surface. Press once with light finger pressure. A good pack fills 70 to 80 percent of the bowl volume, holds a firm top, and leaves air gaps below. Efficient packing means one fill, one tamp, and one light.
how to pack a bowl for the first time
What you need
- Dried flower held at 58 to 62 percent relative humidity
- A grinder with holes 3 mm or wider
- A glass or metal pipe with a bowl hole 1 to 3 mm across
- A pick, paper clip, or pipe tool for the air channel
Match the grind to the bowl
Fine powder plugs the hole and pulls into your mouth. Whole buds leave air pockets and burn on top. A coarse grind gives pieces that touch each other and still pass air. Pieces of 2 to 3 mm fit most bowls. A bowl with a 1 mm hole needs coarser pieces than a bowl with a 3 mm hole.
Pack in one pass
- Sprinkle flower into the bowl. Let gravity settle it. Do not push.
- Stop 1 to 2 mm below the rim.
- Tap the pipe wall with a finger. The surface levels.
- Press with the pad of a finger or a tamper. Use light pressure. The top should feel firm, not dense.
- Poke one gap through the center of the pack down to the bowl hole. This holds airflow.
Test the draw
Pull air through the mouthpiece with the bowl packed and unlit. The draw should feel like a straw in a thick drink. Free flow means the pack sits loose. No flow means the pack sits tight. Repack when either happens.
Common mistakes
- Overpacking. A dense puck blocks air and leaves the bottom unburned.
- Grinding to dust. Dust clogs the hole.
- Filling above the rim. The flame hits flower and chars the pack.
- Wet flower. Flower above 62 percent humidity takes more heat to light and burns harsh.
CBD and hemp flower notes
Hemp flower sold in the US must test at or below 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis under the 2018 Farm Bill. Ask the seller for a certificate of analysis from a third-party lab. The COA lists cannabinoid content plus pesticide, heavy metal, and microbial results. Store flower in a sealed glass jar away from light and heat.
Combustion destroys part of the cannabinoid content. A butane lighter flame runs near 1,300 F. Smoke from any plant material carries tar and carbon monoxide. The CDC links smoke exposure to lung damage.
Keep the pipe clean
Clean the bowl after 3 to 5 uses. Resin narrows the hole and changes the draw on every pack. Use isopropyl alcohol at 91 percent or higher and a pipe cleaner. Dry the pipe before the next fill.
