Short answer
Saliva tests look for THC, not the main metabolite. THC-COOH, the metabolite measured in urine, appears in oral fluid at low levels and is not the target marker. After one dose, THC stays in saliva for 5 minutes to 24 hours. Daily users can test positive for 72 hours. A smaller group tests positive for 7 days or more.
What a saliva test measures
An oral fluid test collects saliva from the mouth and gums with a swab. Labs screen for THC and other cannabinoids. Some panels include CBD and CBN.
Does Saliva Test Detect Cannabis After One Use
Cutoffs decide the result. A sample below the cutoff reads negative. The federal oral fluid guideline sets the initial THC screen at 4 ng/mL and confirmation at 2 ng/mL. Labs confirm each positive with mass spectrometry.
can cannabis be detected in mouth swab after 24 hours
Detection window by use pattern
- Single use: 5 minutes to 24 hours
- Weekly use: 24 to 48 hours
- Daily use: up to 72 hours
- Heavy daily use, several times per day: up to 7 days, in a few cases longer
These numbers come from controlled dosing studies. Individual results differ.
How Long Does Cannabis Stay in Saliva?
What changes the window
- Frequency, dose, and THC percentage of the product
- Route of use. Smoked and vaped THC reaches oral fluid in minutes. Edibles produce lower oral fluid levels.
- Time between last use and sample collection
- Food, drink, and oral hygiene before the swab
- Lab cutoff and collection device
Water and mouthwash lower THC in the mouth for about 30 minutes. The effect is short and does not change a confirmed lab result.
Other test types
- Urine: 3 days after one use; 30 days or more for heavy users
- Blood: 1 to 2 days
- Hair: 90 days
Saliva has the shortest window of the four common tests.
CBD and THC
CBD isolate does not contain THC. A product with 0% THC will not produce a THC result above 4 ng/mL. Full-spectrum CBD can carry small amounts of THC. Check the certificate of analysis for the THC number before you buy.
