Ganja Dispensary: Short Answer
A ganja dispensary is a state-licensed store that sells cannabis. "Ganja" comes from Hindi and reached English through the Caribbean. In the US, the word means the same thing as a marijuana dispensary or a cannabis dispensary. It is not a legal category. Cannabis sits on Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. State law, not federal law, decides who may sell it and who may buy it.
Federal Rules and State Licenses
Cannabis is a Schedule I drug under federal law. The DEA lists it with heroin and LSD. No medical use is recognized at the federal level. That status dates to 1970 and remains in place.
States run their own programs. As of 2024, 24 states and the District of Columbia allow adult use. 38 states allow medical use. Rules differ by state. Check the state regulator before you travel.
What a Dispensary Sells
Stock varies by state. Common categories:
- Flower and pre-rolls. THC content often runs 15% to 30%.
- Vape carts and concentrates.
- Edibles. Many states cap a serving at 10 mg THC and a package at 100 mg.
- Topicals and tinctures.
- CBD products, hemp-derived or cannabis-derived.
CBD at a Dispensary vs CBD Online
Hemp CBD with delta-9 THC at or below 0.3% dry weight is legal under federal law. The 2018 Farm Bill set that limit. The FDA has not approved CBD as a food ingredient or a dietary supplement. The FDA has approved one CBD drug, Epidiolex, for certain seizure disorders.
A dispensary may sell cannabis-derived CBD with more THC than hemp products carry. An online CBD seller ships hemp products with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC.
ID, Age, and Payment
Adult-use buyers must be 21 or older in every state that allows it. Medical buyers are 18 or older in most states, and younger with a caregiver in some. Bring a government photo ID. Some states scan it at the door.
Cash is the norm. Card networks block most cannabis purchases. Some states permit debit at the register.
Lab Tests and Labels
State programs require tests for potency, pesticides, heavy metals, mold, and solvents. Ask for the certificate of analysis, or COA. Match the batch number on the COA to the batch number on the package. Check three numbers: mg CBD per serving, total THC, and servings per container.
Safety Notes
CBD blocks some CYP450 enzymes. It can raise blood levels of drugs such as warfarin and some anti-seizure medicines. Talk to a pharmacist if you take prescription drugs.
Do not drive after THC. An edible can take 30 to 120 minutes to take effect and can impair you for hours.
