Short answer

THCA does not get you high on its own. THCA is the acid form of delta-9 THC. It does not trigger the CB1 receptor in a way that causes intoxication. Heat changes the molecule. Smoke, vape, or bake THCA and it turns into delta-9 THC, which does get you high.

What THCA is

THCA stands for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. Formula: C22H30O4. Molecular weight: 358.5 g/mol. It is the form of THC found in the living cannabis plant. Fresh flower and leaves hold THCA, not delta-9 THC. Delta-9 THC forms after harvest as plant material dries and ages, and after heat is applied.

Delta-9 THC has the formula C22H30O2 and a molecular weight of 314.5 g/mol. The gap between the two molecules is one carboxyl group (COOH).

Why raw THCA does not produce a high

THCA binds the CB1 receptor with low affinity. The CB1 receptor is the target that drives the THC high. Without strong binding, there is no euphoria, no altered time sense, and no impairment. Early research on raw THCA points to anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea effects. Those effects come without intoxication.

Heat converts THCA to THC

Decarboxylation is the reaction. Heat breaks off the carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide. The process starts near 220 F (105 C) and speeds up as temperature climbs. A joint burns at 600 F to 900 F. A vape coil reaches similar temperatures. THCA in the flower converts during the draw.

Conversion is not complete. Some THCA stays intact, some becomes delta-9 THC, and some degrades to CBN. The high you feel comes from the delta-9 THC fraction.

THCA flower and vape products

THCA hemp flower is sold in many states. A label may list THCA at 20 percent and delta-9 THC below 0.3 percent. That product gets you high when smoked. The high comes from THC formed during combustion, not from the THCA itself.

Raw THCA taken by mouth as a powder, capsule, or juice does not get you high if it stays below decarboxylation temperature. Edibles are cooked, so the THCA in them converts before you eat it.

Lab tests and label claims

Ask for a certificate of analysis from an ISO 17025 lab. The COA should list THCA, delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC, CBD, and total THC. Total THC = delta-9 THC + (THCA x 0.877). The 0.877 factor is the mass ratio of THC to THCA (314.5 / 358.5 = 0.877).

Legal status

Federal law defines hemp as cannabis with delta-9 THC at or below 0.3 percent by dry weight. The 2018 Farm Bill text counts delta-9 THC, not THCA. Some states count THCA in total THC and restrict or ban THCA flower. Check state law. This page is not legal advice.

Key points

  • Raw THCA: no high.
  • Heated THCA: high, from converted delta-9 THC.
  • THCA flower smoked or vaped: high.
  • THCA capsules or tinctures swallowed cold: no high.
  • Lab COA: needed to know THCA and delta-9 THC content.
