Check the license before the price

Every legal cannabis dispensary holds a state license and a license number. State regulators publish licensee lists. Look up the shop on that list before you compare prices. A storefront with no license number is not a cheaper option. It is an unlicensed seller. Delivery services need a license too. Ask for the number before you order. Licensed delivery charges the same state taxes as a storefront.

Why two shops charge different prices

  • State excise tax. Rates run from 0% to above 35% depending on the state.
  • Local sales tax. City and county add-ons vary inside one state.
  • Testing. Each batch carries lab costs. Some states require more test panels.
  • Rent. A main-street shop pays more per square foot than a shop on a frontage road.
  • Weight tier. A 1 g preroll costs more per gram than a 7 g pack of flower.

Steps that cut the bill

  1. Buy the largest weight tier you will finish. Per-gram price drops at 3.5 g, 7 g, and 14 g.
  2. Ask for house or value brands. Shops price their own label below national brands.
  3. Check daily and weekly deals. Many shops discount one product category per day.
  4. Ask whether a medical card lowers tax. Some states exempt medical purchases from excise tax.
  5. Compare the out-the-door total, tax included, across 3 shops inside your drive radius.

Pitfalls

  • Prices listed before tax. A $40 eighth can ring up at $52.
  • Potency claims with no batch test. Ask for the certificate of analysis for the batch number printed on the package.
  • Map app rankings. Map results reflect ad spend, not shelf price.
  • Unlicensed pop-up shops. No testing, no tax record, no recourse.

Where CBD fits

CBD sold outside state cannabis programs follows different rules. FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement, and the agency has sent warning letters over unsupported health claims. A hemp-derived CBD tincture from a farm bill compliant seller is not the same product as a dispensary item that carries THC. Compare the certificate of analysis, not the front label.

One number stays unknown: per-gram price at the same shop moves week to week. Call before you drive.
