What CBD wax is
CBD wax is a concentrated cannabis extract with a soft, opaque texture similar to coconut oil. Producers make it by pulling cannabinoids and terpenes out of hemp plant material, then purging the solvent until what remains is mostly CBD and a small amount of other plant compounds. Because the plant material is stripped away, a dose of wax is far stronger than the same weight of dried flower or an oil tincture.
Wax sits in the concentrate family next to shatter, budder, crumble, and live resin. Texture depends on how much heat and agitation the extract saw during purging. Wax is usually the least processed of the solid concentrates, which makes it one of the cheaper options and one of the easiest to work with.

How CBD wax is made
Producers start with dried hemp. They run it through a hydrocarbon or CO2 extraction system, which dissolves cannabinoids out of the plant. The crude extract then goes into a vacuum oven to remove leftover solvent. Some producers add heat to decarboxylate the CBD, converting CBDa into CBD. The result is a sticky, pliable wax you can dab or vaporize.
How to use CBD wax
Most people inhale CBD wax through a dab rig or a concentrate vaporizer. Inhaling gives a faster onset than swallowing oil, but the effect does not last as long.
What you need
- CBD wax
- A dab rig, nectar collector, or concentrate vaporizer
- A torch or an electronic nail
- A metal dab tool
- A carb cap
- Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs
Steps
- Heat the nail to between 315°F and 450°F.
- Let the nail cool into that range if you used a torch.
- Scoop a piece of wax about the size of a grain of rice onto the dab tool.
- Touch the wax to the hot nail.
- Place the carb cap over the nail.
- Inhale slowly for 3 to 5 seconds.
- Exhale and wait 15 minutes before you take another dose.
- Swab the nail with a cotton swab while it is still warm.
- Write down the amount you used and how you felt.
Dosing
Dosing wax is not like dosing a tincture. A rice grain can hold 20 mg of CBD or more, depending on the product. Start with half a grain and stay there for a few sessions. Inhaled CBD peaks within 10 minutes and fades over 1 to 2 hours. If you feel nothing at that dose, add a small amount the next time. Do not double the dose at once.
Storage
Wax degrades with heat, light, and air. Keep it in a small glass jar with a tight lid. Store the jar in a cool, dark cabinet, ideally below 75°F. Skip the refrigerator, since condensation forms each time you pull the jar out. Silicone containers are common, but glass holds terpenes better over long storage.
Safety and legal notes
Dabbing above 500°F scorches the wax and creates harsh byproducts. Stay in the vaporization range and use a carb cap to keep the vapor dense. Note that the FDA has not approved CBD for general sale as a supplement or food, and state law on hemp concentrates varies. Buy wax that comes with a lab report showing cannabinoid content and a solvent residue panel.
