Short answer
Most adults start somewhere between 10 and 25 milligrams of CBD per day, taken once or split into two doses. Hold that amount for three to five days and note how you feel. If nothing changes, add 5 mg at a time until you land on an amount that does something useful without making you sleepy or foggy. There is no official daily value for CBD, so the number you settle on is personal. The goal is the lowest amount that works.
Why there is no single correct dose
CBD is not dosed like ibuprofen, where body weight gets you most of the way there. Absorption swings a lot from person to person. Liver enzymes called CYP450 break CBD down at different speeds, and some people clear it in hours while others hold it much longer. Food matters too: a dose taken with a fatty meal can hit harder than the same dose on an empty stomach. Your reason for using it, your weight, and any medications you take all shift the range.
Reading a label: total mg vs mg per mL
This is where most people go wrong. A bottle that says 1000 mg usually holds 30 mL of oil. That works out to about 33 mg per mL, so a full dropper is a big dose. A 300 mg bottle of the same size is only 10 mg per mL. I look for the mg per mL figure first, then measure with the dropper that came in the box.
- 30 mL bottle, 300 mg total: about 10 mg per mL
- 30 mL bottle, 600 mg total: about 20 mg per mL
- 30 mL bottle, 1000 mg total: about 33 mg per mL
- Half a dropper is half the milligrams
Common starting ranges by goal
These are consumer ranges people report using, not clinical prescriptions. Treat them as a place to begin, not a target to hit.
Edibles: CBD Onset Time, Dosing, and Label Checks
- Everyday stress or a general sense of calm: 10 to 25 mg
- Sleep support: 25 to 50 mg in the evening, taken an hour before bed
- Recovery after hard training: 15 to 30 mg, sometimes split morning and night
- Sore knees or a stiff shoulder: a topical, where the dose is far less about milligrams in your bloodstream
Timing and how long a dose lasts
Oil held under the tongue for 60 to 90 seconds tends to come on in 15 to 45 minutes and fade over four to six hours. Gummies and capsules take longer, often one to two hours, and can linger for six hours or more. Inhaled CBD hits in minutes and clears quickly, which makes it easy to overshoot because people redose before the first one lands. Topicals mostly act where you rub them.
How to titrate without guessing
- Pick a fixed time of day and stay with it.
- Write down the milligrams and the time on your phone.
- Keep the amount steady for three to five days before changing anything.
- Move up by 5 mg, not 25 mg.
- Stop climbing when the effect shows up. More is not better here.
If you take too much
The usual signs are drowsiness, dry mouth, loose stools, and a drop in appetite. These pass, but they are a signal to step back down. If you take a blood thinner, thyroid medication, or an anti-seizure drug, talk to a pharmacist before you start, because CBD can raise the levels of some drugs in your body. Anyone with liver concerns should get medical input first.
When to ask a professional
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or are dosing for a child. CBD is not approved by the FDA for general use. The only FDA-approved CBD drug is a prescription seizure medication, and its doses are far higher than anything sold on a shelf. That gap is why self-titration, done slowly, is the sensible route for most people.
