What a cannabis pod system is

A cannabis pod system has two parts: a battery and a pod. The pod is a sealed cartridge that holds oil or distillate. It clicks or snaps into the battery with magnets or clips. Most pods hold 0.5 mL or 1 mL of oil. The battery is small, in most cases 200 mAh to 400 mAh. One charge lasts about one pod.

Closed pod systems take pods from one brand only. The pod shape and the magnet pattern are made for that battery. Open pod systems and 510 batteries take cartridges from many makers.

Parts of the device

  • Battery: lithium-ion cell, 200 to 400 mAh on small pods, 650 to 1,100 mAh on larger ones.
  • Pod: tank, mouthpiece, coil, and wick in one sealed unit.
  • Coil: ceramic or cotton. Ceramic takes more heat before it burns and handles thick distillate.
  • Airflow hole: sets the draw. A small hole gives a tight draw, a large hole gives an open one.
  • Switch: draw-activated (no button) or press-button with voltage settings.

Pod vs 510 cartridge

The 510 thread is a common standard: 5 mm thread diameter, 10 mm length. A 510 battery takes cartridges from many brands. A pod system takes one brand's pods. Pods seal with magnets or clips. 510 cartridges screw in. Pods sit flush and are shorter, which makes them easier to carry.

What sits inside the pod

CBD pods in most cases hold distillate plus terpenes. THC pods hold distillate, live resin, or rosin. Thick oil needs a ceramic coil with wide wick holes. Some oils use propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG) to thin them. Vitamin E acetate is a thickener tied to lung injury. It should not appear in any vape oil, hemp or THC.

Read the ingredient line. A short list is easier to check than a long one. If the label does not name the carrier, ask the seller for the batch file.

Device specs that matter

  • Voltage: 3.0 V to 3.8 V for thick CBD oil. Low heat keeps terpenes intact.
  • Wattage: 5 W to 15 W on small pods.
  • Coil: ceramic for distillate, cotton for thinner liquid.
  • Pod size: 0.5 mL, 1 mL, or 2 mL. Price per mL is the number to compare.
  • Fill type: pre-filled or refillable. A refillable pod lasts 1 to 3 refills in most cases.

Boiling points sit near 157 C (315 F) for THC and 160 to 180 C (320 to 356 F) for CBD. Heat above that range chars oil and breaks down cannabinoids. That is why a 2.4 V to 3.8 V battery beats a high-wattage box mod for pods.

US rules

Federal law: hemp with 0.3% THC or less by dry weight is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. Pods with more THC are not hemp. State law sets sale rules, tax, and age limits. Federal law sets 21 as the minimum age for tobacco and vape products. The FDA has not approved CBD for vaping. The FDA treats e-cigarettes and their parts as tobacco products under the Tobacco Control Act.

Safety data

CDC data as of February 18, 2020: 2,807 hospitalized EVALI cases and 68 deaths. Vitamin E acetate showed up in lung fluid samples from 51 of 51 patients tested. Most cases traced to THC cartridges from informal sources, not store stock. No single device brand was tied to the outbreak.

How to check a pod before you buy

  1. Match the pod to the battery. Model numbers must match on closed systems.
  2. Read the ingredient list. Look for distillate, terpenes, and the carrier. No vitamin E acetate.
  3. Pull the batch lab report (COA) by lot number and date. The COA should list potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
  4. Check CBD or THC content per pod, not per gram.
  5. Compare price per mL across pod sizes.

Storage and use

Store pods upright at 20 to 25 C (68 to 77 F). Heat and sunlight thin the oil and cause leaks. A clogged pod clears with a short draw or a warm device. Do not share pods. The mouthpiece carries saliva and bacteria. A pod that leaks, tastes burnt, or sits open for months should be replaced.
