What a cannabis mocktail is
A cannabis mocktail is a mixed drink with no alcohol and a measured dose of cannabinoids. The base is juice, tonic, soda, or tea. The cannabinoids arrive as a tincture, a powder, an emulsion, or a pre-made beverage. Bars in states with adult-use programs sell them. Home versions use the same glass, ice, and garnish as a cocktail.
Dose first
Measure before you pour. A label lists milligrams per serving. New users start at 1 mg to 2.5 mg of THC. CBD drinks run 10 mg to 25 mg per can. CBD and THC act on the same receptors. CBD can soften the edge of THC. It does not remove impairment. Keep a written count of milligrams per glass.
Why cannabinoids do not mix with water
CBD and THC are fat-soluble. They do not dissolve in water on their own. Makers use emulsifiers, nano-emulsions, or cyclodextrins to hold droplets in suspension. Droplet size changes absorption. A nano-emulsion with particles under 100 nanometers reaches the bloodstream faster than an oil drop. Oral bioavailability for THC sits near 4% to 20%, based on the formulation.
Onset and duration
Drinks hit faster than solid edibles. Most users feel effects in 15 minutes to 45 minutes. A gummy can take 60 minutes to 120 minutes. Effects last 2 hours to 6 hours. Wait 2 hours before a second pour.
Build the drink
- Add 4 oz soda water or tonic.
- Add 0.5 oz lime or lemon juice.
- Add 0.5 oz simple syrup.
- Press 4 mint leaves in the glass.
- Add the cannabinoid dose last. Stir 10 seconds.
- Add ice and a garnish.
Skip alcohol. Skip tinctures that list ethanol as the first ingredient unless the label gives a dose per drop.
Labels and lab tests
Ask for a certificate of analysis. A COA lists cannabinoid content per batch and screens for pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbes. Hemp drinks with 0.3% delta-9 THC or less on a dry weight basis fall under the 2018 Farm Bill. The FDA has not approved CBD as a food additive or a beverage ingredient. State rules differ. Check your state before you buy or sell.
Safety
THC impairs driving. Do not drive after a THC drink. CBD can raise blood levels of some drugs through the CYP450 enzyme system. Blood thinners, seizure drugs, and immunosuppressants are on that list. Talk to a pharmacist. Avoid cannabinoids during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
