What a cannabis menu is
A cannabis menu is the list of products a dispensary or CBD shop sells. Menus show product form, strain or product name, weight, cannabinoid content, price, and stock status. Licensed dispensaries in states with medical or adult-use programs post menus online and at the counter. Hemp CBD shops post separate menus. Hemp THC is capped at 0.3% on a dry weight basis under federal law. Dispensary flower can test above 20% THC.
What a menu lists
- Product form: flower, pre-roll, vape cartridge, concentrate, edible, tincture, topical, capsule
- Strain or product name
- THC content: percentage for flower, milligrams per package for edibles
- CBD content in milligrams
- Weight or count: 3.5 grams, 1 gram, 10 pieces, 30 milliliters
- Price before tax and after tax
- Batch number and test date
- Stock status: in stock, low, sold out
How to read the numbers
Flower labels show THC percentage by weight. A 3.5 gram jar of 20% THC flower holds about 700 mg of THC. Edibles list milligrams per serving and per package. A 10 mg serving inside a 100 mg package is a common adult-use format. Tinctures list milligrams per milliliter, so a 30 mL bottle at 33 mg per mL holds 1,000 mg. Compare cost per milligram, not cost per bottle. A $60 bottle with 1,000 mg costs 6 cents per milligram. A $40 bottle with 500 mg costs 8 cents per milligram.
Lab results and batch numbers
A batch number lets a buyer pull the certificate of analysis, or COA. A COA lists cannabinoid potency, terpene profile, pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial results. Ask for the COA by batch number. If a shop cannot produce one, treat the potency number on the menu as unverified. Menu potency can also shift between harvests, so check the batch date.
Hemp CBD menus differ
Hemp CBD menus list milligrams per bottle or per gummy. Labels name the extract type: isolate, broad spectrum, or full spectrum. Isolate holds CBD and no THC. Broad spectrum holds multiple cannabinoids and no THC. Full spectrum holds trace THC at or under 0.3% dry weight. Hemp products ship across state lines under federal rules. Dispensary cannabis does not cross state lines.
Legal notes
Cannabis rules vary by state, county, and city. Some states allow medical sales and no adult-use sales. Some allow both. The FDA has not approved cannabis for medical use and has approved one CBD-based prescription drug. Menus change with supply, tax rates, and harvest. Price and stock on a menu can differ from the counter price. Call ahead for a hold if the menu shows low stock.
