Cannabis lotion is a topical product made by blending cannabinoids such as CBD, and sometimes THC, into a cream or lotion base. You rub it into the skin over the area where you feel discomfort, and the effect stays local rather than spreading through your body. Most products sold in CBD stores contain CBD only and no THC, so they do not produce a high. Onset is typically 15 to 45 minutes, and effects often last two to four hours.

CBD lotion vs. THC lotion

CBD topicals are sold widely and are the type most people start with. THC lotions are only available in states with legal adult-use or medical programs, and they may produce mild psychoactive effects if enough is absorbed, though this is uncommon with standard topical use. Some products combine both cannabinoids along with menthol, camphor, or arnica for a cooling or warming sensation.

How to use cannabis lotion

  1. Patch test first. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm and wait 24 hours to check for redness, itching, or rash.
  2. Wash and dry the treatment area so the product absorbs evenly.
  3. Squeeze a pea-sized amount onto your fingertips.
  4. Massage the lotion into the skin in slow circles until it disappears.
  5. Wait 15 to 45 minutes before you judge whether it worked.
  6. Reapply after two to four hours if needed, staying within the limit printed on the label.
  7. Wash your hands right after applying so you do not transfer lotion to your eyes or mouth.

How much to use

Start with the smallest amount that covers the area. A pea-sized dose is enough for a knee or wrist; a larger area like the lower back may take a quarter-sized amount. More is not better. Topicals have a ceiling effect, and piling on extra product mostly wastes it and increases the chance of skin irritation.

How long it takes to work

You should feel something within 15 to 45 minutes. If you feel nothing after an hour, the dose was likely too low or the product does not suit you. Give any new lotion at least three separate tries on different days before deciding.

What to check before you buy

  • Total CBD or THC in milligrams, not just the bottle size.
  • A batch number and a third-party lab report you can match to that batch.
  • Whether it is full spectrum, broad spectrum, or isolate.
  • Ingredients that could irritate you, including fragrance and preservatives.
  • An expiration date. Cannabinoids degrade over time.

Safety and side effects

Do not apply cannabis lotion to broken skin, open wounds, or sunburn. Keep it away from your eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. The most common reactions are mild redness and itching at the application site. Talk to a doctor before using it if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking prescription medication, since even low systemic absorption can matter for some drugs. Store the tube at room temperature, out of direct sun, and keep it away from children and pets.
