Short answer
For most people the best cannabis grinder is a four-piece aluminum model about 2.5 in (63 mm) wide, with a kief screen, a threaded lid, and holes between 0.5 mm and 1 mm. A two-piece works for travel. A three-piece skips the kief catch. Grind size changes how flower burns, so match the hole pattern to your use.
Parts and what they do
- Two-piece: lid and base only. Shreds and stores in one unit. Small and light.
- Three-piece: adds a chamber that holds ground flower. No kief screen.
- Four-piece: adds a screen and a kief catch below it. Kief falls through over time.
Size
2.5 in (63 mm) is the common size for home use. A 2 in (50 mm) model fits a pocket. 3 in (75 mm) and larger models hold more flower and take more hand force. Weight tracks size: a 2.5 in aluminum four-piece runs about 100 g to 140 g.
Material
Aluminum is light and common. 6061 is a standard alloy for grinder bodies. Anodized coatings add wear resistance. Check that the coating covers the teeth and the rim. Stainless steel weighs more and resists dents. Plastic teeth dull and can chip. Avoid painted interiors, since paint can flake into flower.
Teeth and holes
Diamond or triangle teeth cut flower. Count the teeth: 20 to 30 on a 2.5 in grinder is normal. More teeth mean a finer shred and more drag. Hole size sets grind: 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm gives a fine grind, 1 mm to 1.5 mm gives a coarse grind. Round holes with a chamfered edge feed better than sharp-cut slots.
Kief screen
A 100 to 150 micron screen lets trichome heads pass and holds plant matter back. Finer screens (60 to 90 micron) pass less material and give a cleaner catch. A screen clogged with resin stops working. Brush it with a stiff brush and isopropyl alcohol.
Grind for CBD flower
CBD flower is trimmed and cured like other cannabis flower. Dry flower grinds to powder and burns hot. Flower at about 58% to 62% relative humidity shreds into soft pieces. A coarse grind suits a joint or a vaporizer at 350 F to 390 F. A fine grind suits a pipe. Store ground flower in a sealed jar and use it within a few days.
Cleaning and care
Resin builds on teeth and screen. Soak metal parts in isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) for 20 to 30 minutes, then brush and rinse. Do not soak wood or plastic. Dry parts before reassembly. Clean a grinder every 2 to 4 weeks with heavy use.
Buying checklist
- Pick size: 2.5 in for home, 2 in for travel.
- Pick piece count: four-piece for kief, two-piece for portability.
- Confirm material and coating, inside and out.
- Check hole size and tooth count.
- Check thread quality and magnet fit.
- Confirm the screen is replaceable.
Note: small magnets in grinder lids can come loose. Keep them away from children and pets.
