Edibles are cannabis or hemp products you eat or drink, and they behave nothing like a vape or a joint. Effects take 30 minutes to 2 hours to show up, they last longer, and per milligram they land harder once they do. That delay is behind most bad edible stories I hear.

Why the slow start

Swallowed cannabinoids travel through the gut and then the liver. The liver turns delta-9 THC into 11-hydroxy THC, a metabolite that reaches the brain more easily than THC itself. Same milligram, stronger ride. Most people feel the first wave somewhere between 30 and 120 minutes in, peak around 2 to 4 hours, and taper over 6 hours or more. A gummy can still be climbing while your head tells you it did nothing.

THC edibles and CBD edibles are different purchases

In adult-use states, a piece of chocolate or a gummy often carries 5 or 10 mg of THC. Hemp-derived edibles sold online are capped at 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight under federal law, but a big gummy can still stack up milligrams. CBD edibles usually carry 10 to 50 mg of CBD per serving as isolate, broad spectrum, or full spectrum, where full spectrum keeps trace cannabinoids and terpenes. Expect CBD edibles to be non-intoxicating at normal doses and to build gradually over a week or two of daily use, not in an hour.

How to read the package

  • Milligrams per serving versus milligrams per package. Those are very different numbers.
  • How many servings the package actually holds. A 10-piece bag is 10 servings, not one.
  • Delta-9 THC listed separately from total THC, which may include THCA.
  • Batch or lot number plus a certificate of analysis you can match to that batch.
  • Who did the testing. An in-house lab is not the same as an independent one.
  • Cannabinoid profile beyond CBD and THC: CBG, CBN, CBC, and what they add up to.
  • Allergens and sugar load, especially in gummies and baked goods.

Dosing without regret

With THC, start at 1 to 2.5 mg and wait a full 2 hours before taking more. That is a quarter of a typical 10 mg serving, so a knife and a cutting board are part of the routine. With CBD, 10 to 25 mg is a common starting point, and you can move up every few days. Take edibles with food if your stomach is sensitive. Keep a note of the dose and the time on your phone, because memory is unreliable two hours in.

What I check before buying

A current COA that matches the batch on the package, a clear milligram breakdown per piece, and a stated extraction method. I want to know whether the base is hemp or cannabis, because that tells me which legal market it came from and what testing rules applied. I also look for a brand that prints a phone number or batch lookup rather than a vague contact form. If a label lists potency but no lab, I pass.

Storage, kids, and pets

Edibles look like candy because they often are candy. Keep them in a locked box, out of the kitchen snack drawer, and away from dogs, who are far more sensitive to THC than people. Don't combine edibles with alcohol on a first try. Don't drive on a dose you haven't tested before. If a child or pet eats a product with THC, call your regional poison center right away rather than waiting for symptoms.
