What a dugout and bat are
A dugout is a small box with two compartments. One chamber holds ground cannabis flower. The other holds a bat, also called a one-hitter: a narrow pipe that holds one dose of flower. A lid or slide covers both chambers. Most dugouts measure 2 to 4 inches long and fit in a pocket.
Parts of a dugout
- Flower chamber: holds about 0.5 to 2 grams of ground flower.
- Bat: a straight pipe, 2 to 3 inches long, with a bowl at one end that holds about 0.1 to 0.2 grams.
- Lid or slide: covers both chambers and keeps flower in place.
- Poker: a metal pin stored in some models to clear the bowl.
How to load and use a bat
- Grind flower to a coarse texture. A fine grind packs the bowl too tight and blocks airflow.
- Open the flower chamber.
- Push the bowl end of the bat into the flower. Twist one turn.
- Lift the bat. The bowl now holds one dose.
- Light the edge of the bowl and draw.
- Tap out ash after each session.
Materials and care
Dugouts come in wood, aluminum, and plastic. Wipe wood models with a dry cloth. Do not soak wood in water. Clean the bat with a pipe cleaner and isopropyl alcohol. Let parts dry before you close the box. A clogged bat loses airflow; clear it with the poker or a pipe cleaner.
Legal and product notes
Dugouts are sold as accessories, not as cannabis products. In the US, possession rules for cannabis flower and for CBD flower vary by state. Check your state statute before you buy. Stores that sell CBD flower list lab test results for THC content. Ask for the certificate of analysis. Under federal law, hemp flower must test at or below 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis.
Dugout vs. other pipes
A dugout carries a set dose and a storage chamber in one unit. A glass hand pipe holds a larger bowl and needs a separate container for flower. A dugout suits short sessions and small amounts. It does not suit sharing with a group.
