Cannabis dab pen basics
A cannabis dab pen is a battery-powered device that heats cannabis concentrate into vapor. The user inhales the vapor. There is no flame and no combustion. Most pens use a 510-thread battery or come as a sealed disposable unit.
Concentrate, not flower. A dab pen holds oil, wax, shatter, or distillate. A dry herb vape holds ground flower. The two devices do not interchange.
Parts of a dab pen
- Battery: 350 mAh to 1,500 mAh, charged by USB or USB-C.
- Atomizer or coil: ceramic, quartz, or cotton wick. It reaches 300 F to 500 F.
- Chamber: holds the concentrate. Wax pens load by hand. Cartridge pens use a pre-filled tank.
- Mouthpiece: plastic, glass, or metal.
- Control chip: button or draw activation, with voltage settings from 2.5 V to 4.8 V.
Three common formats
510 cartridge pen
A standard 510-thread battery plus a pre-filled cartridge. Cartridge volume runs 0.5 mL to 1 mL. Distillate in a cartridge tests 70% to 90% THC in states with legal cannabis. Most hemp CBD cartridges test under 0.3% THC.
Disposable pen
Battery, oil, and coil sit in one sealed body. No charging and no refill. Use it until the oil runs out, then discard it.
Wax pen
A coil chamber takes a small piece of concentrate, often 10 mg to 50 mg per load. It clogs if the load is too large or the voltage is too low.
Heat and dose
THC boils near 315 F. CBD boils near 320 F to 356 F. Terpenes vaporize from 310 F to 400 F. Above 450 F, the oil degrades and the vapor turns harsh. Start at 2.5 V to 3.0 V. Raise the setting in small steps.
Vapor hits faster than smoke or an edible. Effects appear within 1 to 5 minutes. A 3-second draw from a 90% THC cartridge delivers about 1 mg to 3 mg of THC, based on draw length and device.
THC pens and CBD pens
Labels matter. THC pens sell at licensed cannabis dispensaries in states with adult-use or medical programs. Hemp-derived CBD pens sell online and in stores where hemp is legal. Check the COA, or certificate of analysis, for cannabinoid potency and for heavy metals, pesticides, and residual solvents.
Legal status in the US
Hemp with 0.3% THC or less on a dry weight basis is legal at the federal level under the 2018 Farm Bill. Cannabis above 0.3% THC stays a Schedule I substance under federal law. State rules differ, and some states ban all hemp vape products. Shipping rules follow state law.
Safety notes
CDC identified vitamin E acetate as a chemical of concern in the 2019 EVALI lung injury outbreak. That outbreak centered on illicit THC cartridges. Vitamin E acetate is a thickener. It does not belong in a vape oil.
- Buy from licensed or state-regulated sources.
- Ask for a batch COA. Match the batch number on the package.
- Avoid oils with added vitamin E acetate, MCT oil, or unknown thickeners.
- Do not use a pen with a cracked mouthpiece or a leaking tank.
- Store upright, below 77 F, away from light.
Cleaning and storage
Wipe the threads with a dry cotton swab every few uses. A clogged cartridge clears with a short preheat cycle or a slow pull. Charge the battery to about half before long storage. Heat and sunlight thin the oil and cause leaks.
