The short answer

Curbside pickup lets a customer buy from a licensed cannabis store without entering the building. The customer orders ahead, parks in a marked spot, shows photo ID to staff, pays, and takes a sealed bag. State rules set the terms. Not every state allows it, and the rules change.

How a curbside order runs

  1. Place the order on the store site or by phone. Pick a pickup window.
  2. Wait for the confirmation. It lists the order number and the parking spot number.
  3. Park in the marked curbside spot and call the number on the sign. Do not walk to the door.
  4. Staff checks photo ID and birth date at the window. Adult-use sales need a customer age 21 or older. Medical sales need a valid patient card in most states.
  5. Pay. Staff hands over a sealed bag. Keep the bag closed until you reach your destination.

What to bring

  • Photo ID with birth date: state driver license, state ID card, military ID, or passport.
  • Cash. Federal banking limits keep many stores on cash. Some stores take debit through a cashless ATM.
  • Medical card if you buy medical cannabis.
  • Order number and a phone.

Rules differ by state

Cannabis retail runs under a state license. A state may allow curbside for medical stores and bar it for adult-use stores. A state may cap the order value or the item count. Some states ended pandemic-era curbside programs and now require customers to come inside. Check the state cannabis regulator for current rules before you drive. Store staff also apply store rules on top of state rules, such as a cutoff time for curbside orders.

Curbside for cannabis compared with CBD

Hemp-derived CBD that carries 0.3% delta-9 THC or less on a dry weight basis falls under federal farm bill rules. A CBD store can offer curbside as a retail choice. Marijuana curbside depends on a state cannabis license, a state-approved point of sale, and state transport rules. Do not assume a CBD store policy applies to a licensed dispensary, or the reverse.

Payment and limits

Purchase limits come from state law and count per customer per day. Keep the receipt. A receipt shows the store, the date, the items, and the tax. Curbside and delivery count against the same limit in several states.

Common mistakes

  • Driving to the store before the confirmation arrives.
  • Leaving ID in the car console and walking up without it.
  • Opening the package in the car. An open package can count as an open container.
  • Assuming a card works. Call first if you plan to pay by card.

What to ask the store

  • Which hours do you run curbside?
  • Do you take cards or cash only?
  • Do you check medical cards at the curb?
  • What is the per-day limit for my order?

What this page does not track

Rules change by legislative session and by regulator order. This page does not track each state. Confirm with the state cannabis regulator or the store before you order.
