What cannabis curbside pickup is

Curbside pickup lets you order from a licensed dispensary online or by phone, then collect the order from a parking spot outside the store. You stay in your vehicle. A staff member brings the sealed bag to you and checks your ID at the curb or through the window. It is not delivery. You still drive to the retailer, and the sale is completed on the licensed property. Whether the service exists at all depends on your state, your city or county, and sometimes on whether you hold a medical card or shop as an adult-use customer.

Prerequisites

  • A valid government photo ID showing you are of legal age in that state, or a current medical cannabis card where medical rules apply.
  • A dispensary near you that lists curbside service for your specific store location.
  • A phone number the store can text when the order is ready.
  • A payment method the retailer accepts. Many cannabis businesses are cash-only because of federal banking limits.

How to place and collect an order

  1. Open the dispensary menu and confirm the store offers curbside pickup at your location.
  2. Check the curbside hours, which are often shorter than in-store hours.
  3. Add your products to the cart and review the listed potency, size, and price for each item.
  4. Choose curbside pickup at checkout instead of in-store pickup or delivery.
  5. Enter your name, mobile number, and vehicle description so staff can find you.
  6. Submit the order and wait for the confirmation text or email.
  7. Drive to the address and park in the designated curbside space, not in a fire lane or a no-parking zone.
  8. Reply to the confirmation message with your parking spot number or a short description of your car.
  9. Keep your ID in hand and hold it up or pass it out when the staff member arrives.
  10. Confirm the item count against your receipt before you drive away.

What happens at the curb

A budtender or runner approaches your vehicle with the order already bagged and labeled. They verify your ID, match it to the name on the order, and complete payment if you did not prepay. Some stores require a signature. Age verification is the same as inside the shop, so a passenger cannot collect an order placed in someone else's name. Expect the whole exchange to take a few minutes when the parking lot is quiet and longer during peak evening hours.

Rules that change by state

Curbside sales are a state-level permission, not a national right. Some states allow curbside for all customers, some allow it only for medical patients or people with qualifying health needs, and some prohibit it outright. Local ordinances can be stricter than state law, so a dispensary in one city may offer curbside while a shop twenty minutes away cannot. Product limits, purchase caps, and tax rates stay the same as an in-store visit. You cannot buy more at the curb than you could at the counter.

Where CBD fits

Hemp-derived CBD sits outside these rules in most cases. Federally legal CBD products are typically sold online and shipped to your door, so you do not need a dispensary trip or a curbside slot to buy them. If a product contains THC above the federal hemp limit, it falls under state cannabis law and curbside rules apply. Check the certificate of analysis on any CBD listing to confirm what you are actually buying.
