Cannabis cookies are baked goods made with cannabis-infused butter or oil. They can contain THC, CBD, or both. The effects depend on the dose, the cannabinoid, and your tolerance.
CBD vs. THC cookies
CBD cookies do not produce a high. They may support relaxation. THC cookies produce a high and can cause anxiety, paranoia, or impaired coordination. Some cookies contain both cannabinoids.
Prerequisites
- Cannabis flower or concentrate, or CBD isolate
- Butter or coconut oil
- Oven and oven thermometer
- Baking sheet, mixing bowls, whisk
- Cheesecloth or fine strainer
- Standard cookie recipe
- Scale for dosing
How to make cannabis cookies
- Decarboxylate the cannabis. Heat oven to 240°F (115°C). Spread ground cannabis on a baking sheet. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes. This converts THCA to THC and CBDA to CBD.
- Infuse the butter or oil. Melt 1 cup of butter or oil in a saucepan. Add the decarboxylated cannabis. Simmer on low for 2 to 3 hours. Stir often. Do not boil.
- Strain the infusion. Line a strainer with cheesecloth. Pour the mixture through. Squeeze the cheesecloth to extract all liquid. Discard the plant material.
- Mix the cookie dough. Use your favorite cookie recipe. Replace the regular butter or oil with the cannabis infusion. Keep the same amount.
- Bake the cookies. Follow the recipe temperature and time. Let them cool on a rack.
- Dose the cookies. Cut each cookie into small, equal pieces. Calculate the total THC or CBD per cookie. Start with a low dose, such as 1 to 2 mg THC or 5 to 10 mg CBD.
- Store the cookies. Keep them in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to one week. Freeze for up to three months.
Dosing and safety
Edibles take 30 to 120 minutes to take effect. The effects can last 4 to 8 hours. Do not eat more if you feel nothing after 30 minutes. Wait at least 2 hours. Keep cannabis cookies away from children and pets. Follow your state laws. CBD is legal in many states, but THC is not.
Storage
Store cannabis cookies in a cool, dark place. Use an airtight container. Label the container with the dose and date. This helps you avoid overconsumption.
