A cannabis cart holds potency longest when it stays upright, sealed, in the dark, at 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat, light, and air break down cannabinoids and terpenes. Once the oil touches the coil, the clock runs faster.
Storage Conditions That Matter
- Temperature: 60 to 70 degrees F. Above 80 degrees F, oxidation and decarboxylation speed up.
- Light: UV degrades THC and CBD. Amber glass or opaque metal blocks it.
- Air: headspace oxygen converts THC into CBN. Keep the cart sealed when unused.
- Position: upright. A cart laid on its side pulls oil into the airway and mouthpiece.
What Oxidation Does
THC oxidizes into cannabinol, or CBN. CBN binds CB1 receptors with about one tenth the affinity of THC, so a cart that sat in heat delivers less effect per milligram. Terpenes leave first. Myrcene boils near 334 degrees F and limonene near 349 degrees F, so a hot car or a hot shelf changes flavor before it changes potency.
Hardware Limits
Cart hardware sets a second clock. A wick and coil need oil to stay saturated. Cold oil moves slower, which causes dry hits and a burnt taste. Some users refrigerate carts to slow chemistry, then hit clogs when the oil thickens. Preheat functions at 2.5 to 3.3 volts help. High voltage scorches oil and shortens the cart.
Signs a Cart Is Past Its Window
- Oil that turns from clear to dark amber or brown
- Weak effect at the same voltage and dose
- Peppery or stale taste
- Clogs that return after clearing
- Leakage at the mouthpiece or 510 thread
Contamination Risk
Vitamin E acetate was tied to EVALI, an outbreak of lung injury. CDC counted 2,807 hospitalized cases and 68 deaths as of February 18, 2020. Most cases involved THC carts from informal sources. No single device, brand, or product was linked to every case. Lab-tested, sealed carts from licensed sellers cut that risk. The FDA has not approved any cannabis product for vaping.
Shelf Life
No standard shelf life exists for cannabis carts, and state rules differ. Some labels list 12 months from the packaging date. Real stability depends on the oil, the terpene load, the hardware, and storage. A sealed cart kept cool and dark keeps quality longer than one carried in a pocket.
