Quick answer

A search for a cannabis bong near you returns smoke shops, head shops, glass studios, and some gas stations. Most US metros have 5 to 20 such stores within 15 miles. A bong is hardware. It holds no cannabis and faces no federal ban. Your state law governs what goes in it.

Where bongs are sold

  • Smoke shops and head shops. The main channel. Inventory runs 20 to 200 glass pieces.
  • Glass studios. Artists sell direct. Stock changes week to week.
  • Convenience stores and gas stations. Silicone and acrylic models, $10 to $30.
  • Online retailers. Wider size range. Shipping takes 2 to 7 days.

What to check in the store

Joint size. Most bongs use a 14mm or 18mm female joint. The downstem and bowl must match. Ask staff to test-fit the stem.

Glass thickness. Walls run 3mm to 9mm. A 5mm wall survives a counter-height drop better than a 3mm wall.

Height. Tabletop models run 8 to 12 inches. Beakers and straight tubes run 12 to 18 inches. Larger tubes hold more smoke and need more lung volume.

Percolators. A honeycomb or showerhead perc adds filtration. It also adds cleaning work. Each perc is one more place for resin to collect.

Base. A wide, thick base resists tipping. Check the joint and the mouthpiece rim for chips.

Price ranges

  • Acrylic or silicone: $10 to $35
  • Basic 5mm glass beaker: $40 to $90
  • Thick 7mm to 9mm glass with a perc: $120 to $400
  • Artist-made heady glass: $400 and up

Cash is common at small shops. Many set a card minimum of $10 to $15.

Legal notes

Bong sales are legal in most US states. Cannabis possession and use are not. State law sets that line. Hemp flower at 0.3% delta-9 THC or less by dry weight is legal under federal law after the 2018 Farm Bill. Some states ban hemp flower in spite of that. Read your state code before you buy flower.

Do not drive with a used bong within reach. Residue can count as paraphernalia or as a controlled substance in some states.

Bongs and CBD flower

CBD flower is hemp. Federal rules cap it at 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. Smoke from any plant material carries tar and irritants. A water pipe cools the smoke and traps some particles. It does not remove all of them. CDC and NIDA list coughing, wheezing, and bronchitis as risks tied to smoked cannabis.

Shop staff can tell you joint size, glass thickness, and the maker. They cannot tell you what your state allows.

Questions to ask
