Hemp cannabinoids come from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of Cannabis sativa plants that test at or below 0.3% THC by dry weight. That number is the legal divide between hemp and marijuana in the US, and it was written into the 2018 Farm Bill. CBD gets most of the attention, but hemp carries dozens of related compounds, including CBG, CBC, CBN, CBDV, and THCV.

Why the 0.3% THC Line Matters

Hemp and marijuana are the same species. The difference is a measurement. A crop is hemp if its delta-9 THC concentration stays at or under 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Go over, and the crop is treated as marijuana under federal law. This is why hemp farmers test their fields before harvest rather than after, and why a reputable seller can tell you exactly which batch a product came from.

Which Cannabinoids Hemp Actually Contains

The plant makes a family of compounds called phytocannabinoids, and they start out in acidic form. The main ones found in hemp cultivars bred for low THC:

hemp-based cannabinoids

  • CBD and CBDA, the most abundant pair in most hemp varieties.
  • CBG and CBGA, often called the parent compound since CBGA sits upstream of both CBD and THC in the plant's chemistry.
  • CBC and CBCA, usually present in small amounts.
  • CBN, which shows up as CBD degrades over time and heat, so higher CBN hints at older material.
  • CBDV and THCV, minor cannabinoids that appear in some genetics at noticeable levels.

Acidic Forms Versus Activated Forms

Raw hemp tissue holds CBDA, CBGA, and THCA. These have an extra carboxyl group that keeps them from binding the way their neutral versions do. Heat or prolonged storage removes that group in a process called decarboxylation, turning CBDA into CBD. If a label lists both, the acidic form is not a bonus ingredient, it is just material that has not been heated yet.

How Cannabinoids Get Pulled Out of the Plant

Extraction is where quality gets decided. The common routes:

  • Supercritical CO2, the industry standard. Clean, tunable, and expensive to run.
  • Ethanol, fast and scalable, but it also drags along chlorophyll, waxes, and sugars if the operator is sloppy.
  • Hydrocarbon solvents such as butane, common in THC concentrates and rare in hemp.
  • Oil infusion, where hemp sits in a carrier oil. Simple, but the resulting potency is low and inconsistent.

After extraction comes winterization, filtration, and often distillation. Each step strips something out, which is why a crude extract and a refined distillate behave nothing alike in a bottle.

Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, Isolate

Full spectrum keeps the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant compounds together. Broad spectrum removes THC while keeping most of the rest. Isolate is a single purified cannabinoid, usually CBD, at 99% or higher, with no terpenes and no minor cannabinoids. None of these is automatically better. They are different products for different uses, and the label should say which one you are buying.

What a Lab Report Should Prove

A certificate of analysis from an ISO-accredited third-party lab is the only real evidence behind a hemp product. Look for potency results broken out by individual cannabinoid, plus panels for residual solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, microbial contamination, and mycotoxins. Batch numbers on the COA should match the batch number on the package. If a company posts one COA for an entire product line, that is a warning sign.

Two Things People Get Wrong

Hemp seed oil contains no cannabinoids. It is a pressed food oil from the seeds, which do not produce CBD or anything else in the cannabinoid family. If a bottle claims both, read the ingredient list carefully. The other mix-up is delta-8 THC, which is not extracted from hemp in meaningful quantities. It is made by chemically converting hemp CBD in a lab, and its legal status varies by state.

What I Check Before Buying

  • Does the COA come from a lab that is not owned by the brand?
  • Is the THC result below 0.3% and reported per batch?
  • Does the package name the extraction method and the carrier oil?
  • Is the CBD amount per serving clear, or is it buried in a total-milligrams number for the whole bottle?
  • Does the company answer basic questions about sourcing without a script?

Hemp cannabinoids are not complicated once you know what to look for. The plant produces them, the law caps one of them, and the lab report tells you whether anyone got it right.
