Short answer
A cannabis drug test result depends on four items: test type, dose, frequency of use, and time since last use. Urine is the test used most in the US. A single THC use can clear the 50 ng/mL cutoff in about 3 days. Daily use can take 30 days or longer. No product or method makes a negative result certain.
Detection windows by test
- Urine: 1 to 3 days after one use; up to 30 days for chronic users.
- Blood: 1 to 2 days for THC; 7 days or more for heavy daily use.
- Saliva: 24 to 72 hours.
- Hair: up to 90 days.
Urine tests look for THC-COOH, a metabolite. The screening immunoassay cutoff is 50 ng/mL. A confirmatory GC-MS or LC-MS/MS test uses a cutoff of 15 ng/mL. A sample below 50 ng/mL on the screen counts as negative. A sample between 15 and 50 ng/mL on the confirmatory test counts as positive.

CBD and THC
Federal law allows hemp and hemp-derived CBD to hold up to 0.3% THC by dry weight. Full-spectrum CBD keeps that THC plus other cannabinoids. Daily doses of full-spectrum CBD near 50 mg can add enough THC to show up in urine. Case reports describe positive urine screens in people who used full-spectrum CBD oil for weeks. CBD isolate has THC removed, and most labs report THC below the limit of quantitation.
how long before a drug test should you stop cannabis
What changes the timeline
- Body fat. THC is fat-soluble and stores in fat tissue. Release is slow.
- Dose and frequency. Daily high-THC use loads more metabolite into the body.
- Metabolism. Liver enzymes CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 break down THC. Gene variants change the rate.
- Age and liver function.
- Exercise. Fat loss can move stored THC into blood for a short time.
- Secondhand smoke. Studies of non-smokers in rooms with heavy smoke found urine THC below the 50 ng/mL cutoff in most cases.
Dilution, masking, and home tests
Water and commercial detox drinks lower the metabolite level in urine but also lower creatinine. Labs flag a sample with creatinine below 20 mg/dL, or specific gravity outside 1.003 to 1.030. A flagged sample can count as a refusal or lead to a retest. No masking product has proof of a negative result in controlled studies.
what kind of drug test detects cannabis
Home test strips use the same 50 ng/mL cutoff as labs. A strip at 1 to 2 days before a lab test gives a rough range, not a guarantee.
If you use CBD
- Read the certificate of analysis.
- Check the THC result and the lab name.
- Pick broad-spectrum or isolate when the THC value sits at or below the limit of quantitation.
- Record the dose and the product name.
- Ask the test administrator which test is used and which cutoff applies.
