Broad spectrum CBD oil

Broad spectrum CBD oil is a hemp extract that contains CBD plus other cannabinoids and terpenes. It has THC removed or reduced to trace amounts. The term has no federal definition. A lab test defines the product.

Broad Spectrum Hemp CBD: What It Is and Why It's Popular

Federal law limits hemp to 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis. A broad spectrum label does not guarantee a 0% THC result. Trace THC can appear. Read the certificate of analysis (COA) for the batch.

Broad spectrum vs. full spectrum

Full spectrum CBD oil keeps THC at or below the hemp limit. Broad spectrum oil targets the same plant compounds but removes THC. Isolate contains CBD only. Product labels use these terms in different ways. Ask the seller for cannabinoid potency by batch.

Check the COA

A COA is a lab report for one batch. It should list CBD, CBDA, THC, THCA, and other cannabinoids in mg/g or %. It should also list tests for pesticides, heavy metals, microbials, and residual solvents. Check the batch number on the label against the COA. Check the lab name and test date.

Dose and use

No standard CBD dose exists. The FDA has approved only one CBD drug, Epidiolex, for specific seizure disorders. It has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement. Start with a low serving. Record the amount, time, and effect. Avoid changing dose and product at the same time.

Safety and drug interactions

CBD can interact with medicines. The NCCIH lists drowsiness, diarrhea, and liver injury as possible side effects. Talk to a clinician before use if you take prescription drugs, have liver disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

THC and drug tests

Broad spectrum products can contain trace THC. Repeated use may lead to a positive drug screen. If a test is required for work or sport, choose a product with a COA that shows no THC, and confirm the limit with the testing program.
