What bong use means

A bong is a water pipe. Smoke or vapor travels through water before it reaches your mouth. The water cools the smoke and traps some particles. Bong use does not remove tar, carbon monoxide, or all toxins from smoke.

Parts of a bong

  • Bowl: holds the material.
  • Downstem: tube from the bowl into the water.
  • Chamber: holds the water.
  • Neck and mouthpiece: path to your mouth.
  • Carb or slide: hole or joint that clears the chamber.
  • Percolator: extra chamber on some models. It splits smoke into smaller bubbles.

Steps for bong use

  1. Fill the chamber with water. Cover the downstem tip by 0.5 inch to 1 inch. More water means more drag.
  2. Grind the material. A coarse grind burns slower than a fine powder.
  3. Pack the bowl. A loose fill lets air pass. A tight pack restricts airflow.
  4. Hold the mouthpiece to your lips. Put a finger on the carb or lift the slide.
  5. Light the edge of the bowl. Draw slow. The flame pulls down as air moves.
  6. Release the carb or pull the slide. Inhale the smoke from the chamber in one motion.
  7. Exhale. Let the bowl cool before the next hit.

Water level and temperature

Cold water adds cooling. Warm water gives a milder feel for some users. Ice in the neck cools vapor more. Water does not filter out carbon monoxide. Combustion at high heat creates tar and other byproducts.

Bong use with CBD flower

CBD flower is hemp. Federal law caps hemp at 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. A label with a lab report should list cannabinoid content. Combustion destroys some cannabinoids and terpenes. Vapor at 320 F to 430 F carries more of them.

Cleaning

Resin builds on glass and blocks airflow. Clean the bong every 1 to 2 weeks with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt. Rinse with warm water. Change the water after each session. Do not use a bong with cracks near the mouthpiece.
