What Is a Blunt?
A blunt is a cigar that has been split open, emptied of its tobacco filler, and re-rolled with ground cannabis or hemp flower. The outer tobacco leaf stays in place and acts as the rolling paper. That leaf makes a blunt burn slower than a joint and hold more material, about 0.5 to 1 gram. Blunts can hold cannabis, hemp-derived CBD flower, or a mix of flower and tobacco.
How a Blunt Differs From a Joint
- Wrap: a blunt uses a tobacco leaf or a hemp wrap, a joint uses paper.
- Burn: a leaf wrap burns slower and hotter, so a blunt lasts longer.
- Draw: blunt smoke is thicker and heavier on the throat.
- Nicotine: tobacco wraps add nicotine unless you switch to a hemp wrap.
Wrap Options
- Tobacco leaf cigars, the traditional route, with nicotine in the leaf.
- Hemp wraps made from hemp fiber or leaf, with no tobacco and no nicotine.
- Herbal wraps such as palmyra leaf, which burn dry and mild.
How to Roll a Blunt
Work on a clean, flat surface. Break the flower into small, even pieces instead of powder so air can move through the wrap.
- Hold the cigar or blunt wrap along its length and find the seam.
- Split the wrapper with a straight cut or your fingers, running the full length.
- Pull out the tobacco filler and set it aside or discard it.
- Reshape the empty wrapper and let it sit for a minute so it holds form.
- Break up the flower into pieces the size of a grain of rice.
- Spread the flower along the center of the wrapper in a thin, even line.
- Fold one edge over the flower and tuck it under the opposite edge.
- Roll tight with light pressure, keeping the shape even from end to end.
- Moisten the seam with a thin line of water so it sticks.
- Let the blunt rest for a few minutes, then trim both ends.
CBD Blunts and Hemp Flower
A CBD blunt swaps cannabis flower for hemp flower. Federal law defines hemp as cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis, so a hemp blunt built from tested flower stays inside that limit. State rules differ, and some states ban smokeable hemp, so check local law before you buy. A hemp wrap keeps the tobacco leaf out of the equation, which matters if you want to skip nicotine.
What to Check on a CBD Blunt Label
- A certificate of analysis from an independent lab, with cannabinoid content and a pesticide, heavy metal, and microbial panel.
- Total THC listed on a dry weight basis.
- Hemp wrap ingredients, ideally hemp only with no tobacco or filler.
- Harvest and packaging dates so you know the flower is fresh.
Safety Points
Burning any plant material creates smoke that irritates the lungs, and a tobacco leaf wrap adds nicotine, which is addictive. Keep blunts away from minors, do not drive after use, and store flower in a sealed container away from heat and light. If you want to avoid combustion, a dry herb vaporizer heats hemp flower without producing smoke.
